Fukushima and Covid19

USA has 9/11, Japan has 3/11.  3/11/11 was the date of the Fukushima earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster that has had some earthquake political implications for Japan.  1606 people died from the disasters but another 2317 died from a chaotic evacuation amidst lack of public health, medical care and suicides.  A sizable area of Honshu Island was evacuated, not just for days but several years.  Now it is ten years later and people are refusing to return.  Formerly the government was trusted and now there is nationwide great distrust. And this could be a similar outcome if the COVID lockdowns continue in USA.

The Fukushima area has been rebuilt with roads, railways, and many tons of decontaminated soil. But the long limbo for residents has taken a toll on their spirits.  Families were separated, livelihoods lost.  And the government which had quickly signed onto the Paris Climate Agreement intended to use nuclear energy to meet the goals.  54 nuke plants pre-Fukushima produced 25% of the country’s energy.  Today only 6 plants have re-opened and they produce 6%.  What has gone up?  Coal.  In areas that have received an all-clear for return, only 25% have, mostly elderly. Rebuilding a community is far more difficult than repaving the roads.  We in OK have found this to be the case with Kaw City when Kaw Dam displaced the residents.

The last elevated-isotope result agriculturally was 6 years ago in almost all areas of the disaster, though a few lands and a small town next to the plant are advisory not to return yet. Power companies nationwide have poured billions into new seawalls, filter systems, hardened emergency generators and other safety assurances.  Why aren’t the other plants allowed to reopen?  Voter sentiment.  Government trust has gone from 61% to 24%.  Japanese used to trust their leaders but have now frozen the nuclear means to which those leaders wanted to become carbon neutral. Azby Brown of Safecast, an NGO in Tokyo observes, “Trust is not a renewable resource.  Once you lose it, that’s it.” Now Gov is advancing renewables, i.e. wind and wave energy to become 60% of usage (solar doesn’t work in a country with 80” of rain a year).  Experience shows these are capable of topping off supplies but hardly of the majority of power.

Could a similar politics happen in USA in the aftermath of COVID?  First lesson from Fukushima is that keeping people away from their homes was a disaster.  Some say Japan should have only kept restrictions and people from their homes for a month or so.  It was too much disruption with many businesses closed forever.  Will the restaurants come back strong in NYC and the hospital in Slippery Rock?  What if studies show post-mortem that masks didn’t work that well, lockdowns for healthy people only killed lifestyles, that vast numbers of people were treated for depression (as per Fukushima), and statistics were much in error by the fault of people in government who had an agenda?  Trust will fall and particularly trust in government officials.

Christian organizations denied acces to military bases

President Obama has just given an executive order to ban all Christian groups from military bases if the group has not integrated LGBTs into its organization. Contracts to work on base will be denied.  That is, it is not enough to simply accept gays and transgenders and welcome them into your meetings.  You have to have them be part of the staff.  This has the effect of ostracizing all bible-believing and orthodox Christian organizations from the bases.  The following is an email from the Young Life representative working at Ramstein Air base in Germany.  He works with teenagers of our Air Force personnel stationed at the base.  Since housing is entirely on base, there is no way for him to have a ministry.  He is writing the people who have supported him from the states.

Subject: Re: Headwaters Update 4/17/16

Hi Friends:

Thanks so much for praying for us! We are so grateful for your support!

I write to clarify a bit what has happened to us. This is the official statement from our organization, Military Community Youth Ministries, the group to which I have been seconded from Young Life:

"In light of the MCYM/Club Beyond traditional view of marriage and until there is additional legal clarity from the Department of Defense in regards to SOGI (Sexual Orientation Gender Identity), MCYM/Club Beyond Board of Directors has decided we will no longer pursue any contracts with the US Government."

While Christians groups have not been denied access to military bases per se, it is true that Christian groups with a traditional view of marriage and with statements of faith to that effect will find it difficult, if not impossible to work in the military contract system.

My particular work planning camps and service projects was part of fulfilling our contract with the military. No contract means no work. As ministry with kids will most likely go to zero, there will be no kids to plan camps for anyway. That said, we now find ourselves "on the mission field" with no mission to field! We are considering all options but to date God has closed doors more than opening doors here in Europe.

The current contract runs through June 30 so we're good at least until then. I do ask for your continued prayer that God would make a place for us here, or that he would lead us where he wants us soon.

Thanks so much! We miss you guys!

Peace,

Chris

Obama once again shows his contempt for any Christianity that does not submit to his leftism.  (Opiate of the people?) Once again the First Amendment is held meaningless. What really concerns many in the military is that other key parachurch organizations like Navigators, which has a huge ministry among our soldiers will also be booted out.  Chaplains are already forbidden to preach on LGBT issues.  Pray and vote for a candidate who would reverse this horrific contempt for our Constitution and the very concept of Liberty.

What guys realize

If you grow up a guy, you soon learn stuff.  You learn that you are bound to be in a fight every once in awhile.  Sometimes the other kid swings at you or shoves you down.  At such times you had better be ready to defend yourself, even if it’s furtive and you run away after a defensive move.  And you learn that talk only goes so far with some others.  Talk all you want, but if that person thinks you have insulted their sister or threaten them, they are going to get physical.  At such times it is also possible to avoid violence by showing a strong readiness to fight.  Only then, do some opponents back down, having rethought the situation given that they might be in for some harm themselves.  This is about  the only way to dissuade a bully.

USA faces a bully in Putin, who is taking what he wants at will and what he wills might include marionette strings for Europe.  Clearly, there are good suggestions for joining military maneuvers with Baltics all the way to Romania, threatening to send trainers to Ukraine if Vlady makes more moves on Eastern Ukraine.  Krauthammer has a dozen good suggestions.  Read them at nationalreview.com.  But will Obama?  I doubt he does anything much.  The reason is in his narcissism. Narcissists think they are the smartest guys in the room, that the world revolves around them, that they can talk and convince anyone of anything.  This explains why Obama knew beforehand about the fact that Obamacare would cost most people their doctors and policies, would cost at least $2500 more not less—yet he argued just the opposite.  No sane and cautious politician would do such a foolhardy stunt.  Likewise Obama thinks foolishly that he can simply scold Putin and make him stand down.  Not a chance, but only us humbler souls can see this.

And concerning our foreign policy, we need to project strength, lest we get beat up by every opportunist from the Ayatollahs to Kim Jung Un to Putin. Even the Dems now say that maybe Obama will be shocked into change.  I doubt it.  He will continue to think he can just persuade magically.  Meanwhile he wants to cut Defense from $678 B to $572 B.  Our only hope is to not succumb to this disarmament.

Sarah Palin has more balls.  Obama just has golf balls.

Important things to know about Ukraine

I’ve been reading everything I could find about Ukraine’s situation.  Some are astounding and not found in most of the popular articles like AP and NY Times and Yahoo News.

First thing to know is that Ukraine is in deep financial trouble.  It happened when the populist politicians decided that everyone should have a livable fuel bill.  So they bought natural gas from Russia and sell it to the people for 1/5 that price.  It’s kind of the Russian equivalent of food stamps, a big government giveaway for a cold country.  Trouble is, it runs up a huge deficit and has put the national debt in similar shape as Greece.  So with the fiscal crisis, Prez (now former) Yanukovych worked out a deal with Russia.  Only it is a Putin gun-to-the-head deal: Ukraine gets $15 B to cover the deficit, but they have to drop application for EU membership. Yanukovych (pronounced Yeah-nuke-a-vych.  Don’t know if vyches like being nuked or not.) took it, although the parliament had previously voted to apply for the EU.

This ticked off the Ukrainians, especially those in the West.  Ukraine is about the size of Texas, originally grasslands, until the Slavs began to settle it down, first under Cossacks who raided and harassed the nomadic tribes who once ruled the roost (former Mongols and Huns mostly). They were originally Russians, but spoke a different language.  By WW I, the area was ruled by Russia (East and South), Poland and Austria (West).  The Russian area was heavily industrialized during communism and infiltrated by Russians.  So the East speaks Russian and the West, Ukrainian.  This matters much.  The Westerners watched as Poland and Hungary westernized and drew in investment after 1992 while Ukraine did nothing.  Poland now has three times the GDP per person as Ukraine, so the West says, Hey! That could have been us!  On the other hand the East is run like Russia with former apparatchiks taking control of industries, changing little but enriching themselves like kings.  This corruption is the real sore spot among the opposition guys who protested.

Yeah-nuke-a-vych is the kind of guy who thinks if he wins an election, he gets to be dictator now, not president.  So in basic ways he is Obama II—giving away cheap gas and running up the deficit, changing laws at will—but also a dangerous thug.  He tried to steal the election in 2004.  There were protests in what is called the Orange Revolution, and they got him thrown out of office.  But the opposition did just as many giveaways and got the economy in trouble.  Vanny got elected for real the second time around and then strong-armed parliament into changing the constitution giving him lots of powers.   So what happened in the protests was originally they were about the EU, then people got mad when the police fired upon them and said, hey! We want a republic again!  Yanny stalled around by pretending to negotiate with spineless opposition leaders in Parliament which are like Mitch McConnell.  He promised free stuff for the people. Then he unleashed an offensive against the protestors which killed nearly 100 of them.  Suddenly the public was up in arms.  Yanukovych may not have cared a fig about this, but the MPs finally fearing for their own political lives, decided to oust/impeach him. He had jailed Tymoshenko, his main opponent on trumped up charges.  They put out an arrest warrant for Yanny who was forced to flee. They re-instated the 2004 republican constitution.  Tymo came to tell the protestors not to let up.  They have now taken over most of the government buildings. They demand a right for all citizens to bear arms.

But Yanukovych is reportedly in hiding in the Crimea where his big base of support is, and the place where the Russians dearly want as their own.  He is likely to make them a deal to give over Crimea in exchange for their army to put down his opposition.  Trouble for Putin is this.  Does he want the revolution, because to act at this point would certainly bring the ire of just about everyone in Ukraine.  He’ll probably go back to blackmailing Ukraine with gas and bail outs.

It is for this reason that the West and Europe must act quickly and with a lot of money in support of the Ukrainians.  If we pussy foot, which is the standard lead-from-behind technique of Obama, we will lose.  Next is dominos.  Russia and Putin are set to pressure all the old republics into joining a new Russian “federation”  somewhat like the old USSR.  What Ukraine does will make or break Putin’s thuggery.

Maybe Ukraine will split into East and West Ukraine. So what holds Ukraine together?  Kiev, the magnificent old original capital of Russia which all Ukrainians love and the feeling that they are a people apart from the Russians.  A desire for modernization instead of Russian mafia-run big businesses.  Solidarity with Poles/Czechs/Serbs and other Slavs other than the Russians. Will that trump Russian meddling and leftist populism?  Stay tuned.
